Learn about Dave’s journey when he started Northeast Pellet Stoves.
What is your business about?
My business, Northeast Pellet Stoves, gives our clients reliable pellet stove and gas fireplace service. We service all makes and models regardless of where they are purchased.
What inspired you to start this business? How and why did you start your business?
My inspiration to start this business came from working hard for years, making other people rich, and getting nowhere financially. I was tired of wasting my time pretending to be busy at work when work was slow instead of being where I wanted to be the most with my family.
After listening to podcasts of previous entrepreneurs and shows like Joe Rogan saying today how easy it is with the internet to start a business, I decided that it was time to do something. I talked to my friend that had better credit than me, and he said, let’s do it.
The first attempt was woodworking which failed. I was devastated that so much time was gone for nothing. But I then said ok, what else can I do?
I started working for pellet stove companies, learned the trade then decided I could do it for myself while offering better customer care.
So with the help of my friend, we started what is now a successful business, Northeast Pellet Stoves.
What were the biggest challenges you faced in starting your business?
The biggest challenges came from needing more funds and knowledge of how.
But with the previous failure, I realized what I did wrong and where I could improve. I started by learning everything I could about digital marketing and SEO ( search engine optimization), getting ranked high on Google.
How are you balancing your business with your personal life?
The other most significant challenge was time. Finding the time between a family of 5 and a full-time 45-hour-a-week job was challenging. I had to make time, so I would listen to podcasts on what I was learning during lunch breaks, between jobs, and get up early every day to learn everything I could. I would stay up late and stop doing other things I enjoyed. It all has to come with a sacrifice.
Then I set up a site and got registered as a business, and calls started coming in. That’s when I realized how can I do both.
After work, I had to take on my clients, switching shirts in my car.
I finally had enough of my employer after telling me I had to choose my company or his, so I decided on mine. I took the leap of faith, have been free for a year, and have never been happier working. I still work hard and probably more than 40 hours a week, but during my slow periods, I can take breaks instead of filling eight or more hours a day.
I can work my own hours around family outings during the day and when they are in bed instead of missing out on that valuable time. Plus, I’m working for myself now, which feels way better than making someone else’s company more significant and prosperous.
What lessons have you learned so far about being an entrepreneur?
Being an entrepreneur is probably one of the hardest things I have done but also the most rewarding. It is tough, but it is worth it in the end. If it were easy, everyone would be rich.
You are going to fail, and ok, that is how you learn and grow. It is about getting back up and pushing harder than you fall. If you never give up, you will make it. You got to believe it. Take small steps, and don’t fear not knowing an answer. Just be willing to find it.
I have encountered situations I had yet to learn what stove the customer had. With no experience with it, I told them I needed to look into it and did the research, got the parts, and fixed their stove. They were happy as can be all cause I was willing to do what it took to get the job done. Things like that will get you ahead of the competition.
Returning to the most basic thing, just be kind and help others. Everything else will come. Small business owners care about the customer more than the bigger companies, and people are starting to realize this.
Conclusion
Northeast Pellet Stoves, led by founder Dave Thibodeau, has carved a niche in the pellet stove and gas fireplace service industry. The company’s commitment to reliable service, superior customer care, and personalized solutions has earned it a reputation for excellence. By starting this business, Dave not only achieved financial independence but also gained the flexibility to prioritize his family and personal life. As an entrepreneur, Dave has encountered challenges, but he believes that perseverance, continuous learning, and a willingness to help others are essential to success. Northeast Pellet Stoves stands as a testament to the rewards and fulfillment that come with hard work, dedication, and a customer-centric approach.
