Monroe Porter in his article “Winning Strategies in a Challenging Economy” published in the Leaders in Landscape 2009 magazine gave a good list of strategies small businesses can adopt to survive this recession. While his advice focused on landscapers, I think we can learn a thing or two from his tips:
- Be a leader
- Identify and strengthen your business shortcomings
- Get everyone on board
- Salespeople have to sell
- Protect your margins
- Focus on the core business
- Don’t wait too long to cut costs
- Don’t let anyone treat you like a bank
- Know which marketing tactics are most effective for your market
- If you do have to lay people off – again, be a leader

Great tips! Also a good one is to find a low cost advertising resource. There are a few out there that require less than $200 start up. I use BizAdSplash and have been pleased with the results and returns.
