If you think it’s all about sales, you are wrong
There is a lot more to a career in real estate than simply selling. In fact, you will be very surprised to learn that there are requirements which go beyond convincing someone that the piece of real estate in Toronto you have on your desk is right for them. If you enter the business thinking that a good suit, some minor psychology tips, and a silver tongue are all you need, you will be quickly turned around and in ceremonious fashion.
If you have no people skills, you will fail
Real estate is a business where you will be dealing with people on a daily basis. From inquiries to house visits, dealing with vendors and their families, you must be relatable and trustworthy in order for people to want to work with you. This also extends to how much faith they have in the company, so if there is a reason why you consistently get ignored or shunned by clients, the company may suffer as a result.
You try to fool clients
Hard-selling and lies regarding how many people are interested in buying a home may work on some, but don’t expect it to fool everyone. From my experience in real estate – while it appears that you have the upper hand on clients – not all will be as direct and blunt to call you out. Keeping your cards close to your chest is one thing, but blatantly trying to exploit any prospective client can see you quickly exposed, and that is very, very bad for business in any capacity.
You don’t care about your reputation
These days, word of mouth and company reviews have never been a stronger means to judge a firm. In real estate, reputation can be extremely important. Establishing links and networking can be extremely difficult when you or your company is seen in a negative light. You get the best out of yourself by improving yourself. If you are known as someone who “ducks and dives” rather than “flying straight,” you will severely damage your rep.
If you shy away from hard work
From contracts, meetings, house-viewings, social media work, early starts, late nights, coffee runs, it is an exceptionally varied role. As such, you must be prepared to put in the work and the hours. If you are not willing to put in some elbow grease and work the unsociable hours, real estate is probably not for you.
