More and more people are working from home. Faith Popcorn said we are preparing for a world of freelancers. And, it seems that more and more companies are starting to listen. But how do we make ourselves efficient when we work from home? Below are 10 tips that will help you not only be productive, but also happy with your choice.
1. Don’t sit in your pajamas
It’s sunny and it’s nice, if you have a terrace, go out in a swimsuit. You tan while you work, two activities in one. I’m kidding, but it might work. But whatever you do, don’t sit in your pajamas. Wake up. Have breakfast. Take a shower. Get dressed. And then, get on with it. You could start with a list of things you need to do that day – it may be on paper (if you still use a notebook) or in an application.
2. Define your workspace well
Try to organize a special workspace. It would be best to have a room just for you – an office. If you have this comfort, then close the door when you are during the program. If the door is opened, you’d want to leave for more relaxing places (bed, TV, kitchen) more often. Don’t try to work wherever you go. Define your workspace well. Be as comfortable as possible. Not necessarily big, but to be a delimited office. It is very important – this way you will know exactly that you are not at home, but you are at work.
3. Keep your workplace tidy
If you can find everything in your office – from magazines, to creams, from table vouchers to the movie program, then be carefree, you will surely get lost in the challenge. An orderly office will help you have an organized mind. That’s how you will be productive.
4. Pay attention to work, but don’t work all day
When you work from home, you tend to do a lot of things, watching the series being the most common one. And if you get on, you know how it is, you don’t stop. That’s why I recommend you work in another room, with the door closed, so that the TV doesn’t scream. On the other hand, if you work too much, it is not good either. A Science Daily study shows that an average person stays 5 hours in the office. So, when you work from home do not forget to take breaks. It’s up to you how you plan them. But for efficiency I recommend using the Pomodoro technique – 25 minutes of work, 5 minutes of fun. As for fun, even for 5 minutes, you can do whatever you want. From reading some jokes to playing some simple online casino games. Whether it’s a hobby or just for fun, online casino games may help you relieve stress and make you happier. 5. The sitting state does not do you much good
In time you will have problems with the spine. So if you don’t want to do physiotherapy or massage, it would be good to take care of it from now on. So, in addition to a healthy life (pool, gym or any sport you like), take care of yourself when you work. Take breaks. Get up and walk: through the house or the park. Where you want. But not all day sitting in the chair (even if it was very comfortable).
6. Make a schedule and follow it strictly
Even if you have the opportunity to work when you want, you know that the others have a classic program: 9 am/10am – 6pm. Excluding variants where you work with people / teams that are on other continents. However, whatever it is, you should organize your work schedule according to your partners or clients. You may want to work nights or weekends to do other activities in the remaining time, but keep in mind that in order to be successful you have to be and show that you are available, so try to respect their work schedule. But without giving up the freedom to work from home.
7. Try to eat healthy
When you stay home the fridge is always only a few steps away, be careful not to overtake. It’s good to take a break, get up from your chair and take a few steps. It is not good, however, if you eat too much, too often and, by no means, too unhealthy. So, try to make healthy snacks (fruits, vegetables).
8. Be careful not to fall into the Social Media trap
It’s hard, I believe you, but try to limit your time spent on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube (take care most here, it’s like watching the series). I’m not telling you not to use them, we all do, but make a few rules: stay in the morning, at noon and then in the evening after you’ve finished all your work. And during the day, set aside the social media. If you can do that, you will find that you are not only much more productive, but that at the end of the day you will have a lot more new things to discover.
9. Communicate with colleagues / clients / partners
The hardest thing when you work from home will be loneliness. No matter how good you concentrate and how effective you are, after a few days it will be difficult for you to have no one to talk to. So, try to stay in touch with people as much as possible. Or at least enjoy some quality time with your pets.
Don’t try to fix everything by email. To be successful in your career you need to have a healthy psychic, so try to talk to people as much as possible, even if it is only on the phone. And obviously, get out of the house. Try to work from other areas (cafes, parks, restaurants). Find places to feel good, to work, but to have people around you.
10. Give yourself time and do not forget to enjoy success
When you don’t want to work anymore, you know you can go home. Or when you can no longer, you know you have to take a little longer and a few hours of comfort and relaxation at home will follow. But when you work from home, you don’t really have this option. So, try to have a balanced life. Don’t work all the time. Take breaks. Enjoy for every success. And at the end of the day, leave from work.
