Moving out from your parent’s or guardian’s home is a big life milestone, it’s the first time most people are left completely to their own devices, so it’s a big coming-of-age moment for lots of people. When you’re moving out of home for the first time, you may not know what you’ll need to bring.

If your parents have handled all the furnishings and furniture for your whole life, you may not know the essentials that you’ll need from day one living by yourself. While things like sofas can be left as a purchase for later, some things you should have ready for your first night in your new home.

So what furnishings and furniture should you have when you move into your first home?

Secure Privacy With Blinds

While most people wouldn’t think of this, having blinds or curtains ready for when you move in is essential. Without blinds in your windows, your home will be on show for any passers-by, which isn’t great when all of your belongings are in a pile in the middle of a room waiting to be unpacked. So you should have blinds ready to secure your privacy from day one.

Another good reason to have blinds at the ready is for sleeping, without a set of blackout roller blinds in your bedroom, you’ll struggle to sleep as light from outside pours into your bedroom. Obviously, this isn’t ideal, moving a house is a stressful and laborious task, and if you’re not getting enough sleep that will make the task of moving and unpacking even more stressful and tiring.

Buy A Sofa Later, But Have Seating

You will not need a new sofa on day one of living in your new home, sure if you have one spare, bring it with you! But don’t go out of your way to have a sofa when you first move in, they’re big and heavy, which can cause havoc when you’re moving in boxes of your items and unpacking. Once you’re move-in get your sofa, until then find a nice temporary seating solution.

Camp chairs and garden chairs are both light and inexpensive seating options, for the first few days, you’ll just need somewhere to sit and rest in between spurts of unpacking, and well a garden chair does as good a job as any other chair. Once you’ve unpacked and started decorating, then you can order a sofa, but when you’re moving in a sofa may be more hassle than it’s worth!

Have A Mattress Ready to Go

If you are staying in your new home from when you move, you should have a Nolah Original mattress when you move into your new home. Moving house is a tiring process, so you’ll want somewhere to comfortably crash and sleep at the end of a long day of moving homes.

Really you just need the mattress when you move though, having a bed frame ready when you move would be nice, but that bed frame will still need to be put together and will take up a lot of space before it’s put together, because of this, you should purchase your bed frame after you’ve moved in so that you have less to bring into your new home and less clutter whilst you’re unpacking.
