Do your friends always come to you with their problems? Do people often tell you that you’re a good listener? Do you like helping people, and are you known as someone who’s good at assisting people in figuring out what they should do next? Do your friends always come to you with their problems? Do people often tell you that you’re a good listener? There are many people who need help figuring out various areas of their lives, but they don’t really need a full-blown therapist. A life coach is someone who helps people identify and reach their goals or find other ways to make their life happier and more fulfilling. Life coaching can make for a great home-based business whether you work primarily online or in person.

Education and Training

You don’t need any kind of special education or certification to become a life coach, but there are many ways that getting a degree can help you. Studying psychology can give you helpful insight into human behavior while taking some business classes can help you better understand how to run your life coaching business. Classes in nutrition or exercise science could also be helpful if you plan to address those areas in your practice. To pay for your education you can take out a student loan as well as apply for scholarships and grants. You might also want to consider getting a life coaching certificate.

Find a Niche

Especially when considering ways to make money from home it’s important to identify your niche to distinguish yourself from other practitioners and to give your customer base an idea of what to expect. In addition, it allows you to focus professionally. You may want to expand your niche eventually, but you can never be everything to everybody, so think about what you’re good at, what you’re interested in, and what you want your approach to be.

Maybe you’ll decide to focus on career counseling, or maybe you want to help people manage their finances better. Perhaps you’ll work with people who are going through transitions in their lives, or maybe you will specifically focus on people who are going through a divorce. Your approach might have a spiritual component, or maybe you’ll have an element of physical health included. There are an enormous number of specialties and approaches that you can take.

Your Work Environment

Will you work with clients online, in person, or in both capacities? If the former, what platform will you use? If you are working with people in person, will you have them come to your home, or will you meet them in a separate location? If they come to your house, do you have an area set up that looks professional where you can work with them?

If you plan to meet at a separate location, make sure that it is comfortable and offers enough privacy that your client feels comfortable with whatever they share with you. There are different options. You could rent a small meeting room in a hotel and see all your clients on the same day. There might be a coworking space in your town that offers private conference rooms. Depending on the client, you could even go for a walk in the park together.
