Starting a Clothing Line with Unique Technique

Q. I am a former model turned clothing designer and I have just developed a ground breaking technique. My Clothing Technique is private, but there is nothing like it on the market. The Technique is targeting the young 16-26 market. Fun/Expressive everyday clothes such as jeans, t-shirts, etc. I have currently been selling my line 10 pieces at a time to local LA stores. I am using any and all contacts that I have to market my product. I have also committed this as a full-time job now and have the time to create as well as promote this product. My questions to you Homebiz is how do I get a web presence cheaply? What particular avenues should I take to further my product? When do I incorporate my business? Lastly, because the retail business is a fairly uncharted realm for me, where can I find the "steps" needed to take my product mainstream. Thank you so much. I truly appreciate your time and effort with this email. - Mark

A. It looks like you already have your business up and with a good start. And by the way you presented it, you have been selling your products via your personal contacts as well as in some L.A. stores. Since you have set the first phase, you are now ready to expand and increase your volume and get into the bigger business scene.

I would recommend that you should take care of your business the way a business should be. Make sure that you get your business license as well as register your business name in the LA county clerk of court to protect your name. If you intend to use a specific brand name in your product, you must try to get the help of a lawyer to help you apply for a trademark, lest you endanger your name to be copied by others and if you are not protected by the trademark or copyright law, you might lose it to some bright boys out there.

I recommend that you read our comprehensive article about clothing line business which you can find at http://www.powerhomebiz.com/vol66/clothing.htm  It can give you a lot of insights on how to go about your business.

Now to your question of how to get noticed on the web and make your web presence seen, I recommend that you try to look into the Yahoo! Shopping Center and check out how many companies are making good in their web operations. We have some success stories of some of the entrepreneurs who manage and operate a slot at Yahoo! Shopping.

They are not in the clothing line but you can study some points on how they succeeded on the web.

If you are not familiar with web designing, it might be a bit expensive to launch a web site where you pay expensive hourly fees to web designers. Of course, check out with your friends. They may have computer knowledge and you can work things out together. You can buy the Microsoft Frontpage 2000 software and work with it. It's not that hard to learn.

The Power Homebiz website is full of articles which can guide you in your start up. For web design and where you can find references, you may click here -- http://www.powerhomebiz.com/ECommerce/ecommerce.htm
