Unless you have been living under a rock for the past three years, it will not have escaped your attention that crypto has become a booming industry. Only half a decade ago, it was a fringe market full of tiny projects and a seemingly incomprehensible narrative. In contrast, now it is a global industry worth billions of dollars and has everyone involved, from corporations to modest retail investors.

However, as with many major changes in society, the rise in crypto’s popularity has brought a healthy dose of skepticism and myth. Some call it a scam, while others dismiss it as passing whimsy. This makes it tricky to know whether it is worth getting involved in as a young entrepreneur.

There can be no doubt that there is a strong pull of a brain drain and financial boom in the crypto industry at the moment, and there are countless career opportunities for the ambitious young entrepreneur.

This is what you need to know:

What is the crypto industry?

The crypto industry is better described as an ecosystem. This ecosystem contains various facets, from fully decentralized assets like Bitcoin to more centralized blockchain networks like Ethereum, which you can buy from OKX

Countless projects are built onto these blockchain networks, from decentralized finance businesses to entire government processes.

Crypto is a decentralized digital currency that can be used in exchange with other cryptocurrencies or fiat currencies like the US Dollar. They are decentralized because they do not need to go through a centralized third party like a bank or government, instead being independent of any individual controller.

However, there is widespread debate about the true extent of decentralization, as each cryptocurrency has different attributes.

Why is the crypto industry full of potential?

There can be no doubt that the crypto industry is growing fast. With new projects seemingly popping up every day, this market has no shortage of excitement. One compelling reason why so many entrepreneurs are attracted to crypto is because of the potential of the underlying technology itself.

Cryptocurrencies and blockchains are already revolutionizing the base layers of our society – from immutable digital assets like Bitcoin, which cannot be inflated, to instantaneous payment rails and incorruptible data storage capabilities. This provides young and intelligent entrepreneurs the opportunity to truly change the world for the better and put their stamp on society.

Furthermore, despite its immense potential, the crypto industry is still relatively tiny. Compared to the fossil fuel or computing industries, for example, the entire market is there for the taking. Many liken crypto to the dotcom boom of the late nineties – with incredible market share the reward for the winners (like Google).

What to be wary of before jumping into crypto

However, with great opportunities come great risks. You need to be sure you are prepared before you enter the crypto world. As the recent FTX scandal attests, you need to keep your eyes open in this market. If you do your research and don’t just do it to get rich quick, you will stand a good chance of forging a career in crypto.
