As someone who has not been to college, you might think that you will be limited in the type of work you can do. Maybe you were told since childhood that a diploma equals success, or you have seen some of your college-educated pals get great jobs.
Fortunately, the link between college and a great career is not as set in stone as you might think—and there are actually good arguments to be made regarding skipping the university experience.
As for the reasons why a college degree is not everything when it comes to carving out your career path, and why you might be better off exactly as you are, please consider the following points:
Student Debt is a Serious Thing
Earning a college degree is not exactly a cheap endeavor. More than half of college graduates in America will have $30,000 worth of debt when they graduate, according to Student Loan Hero. You may not have that piece of paper that says you have a bachelor’s degree, and that’s OK—you also don’t have tens of thousands of dollars of bills breathing down your neck.
You Can Still Follow Your Career Passions
Here’s some more great news: there are plenty of ways to achieve your career-related goals without ever setting foot on a college campus. Some businesses will provide on the job training that will give you all of the education you need to be successful. For instance, if you have always wanted to be an entrepreneur and open your own business, your stuffy old Aunt Janet might have told you to pursue an MBA first. Fortunately for your career path and bank account, this is not the case; you can launch your own business right now by working for a direct sales company like Amway. Check out this YouTube video that explains what Amway’s business is all about and how you can become an Independent Business Owner and launch your own company selling high-quality products to others. All that you really need to be successful as a business owner is a desire to be an entrepreneur, some good organizational and communication skills and having an established company behind you all the way.
You Can Earn a Great Living
If you are understandably concerned about making enough money to pay your bills, you will be pleased to learn that dozens of jobs with an annual salary of $40,000 or more don’t require a college degree. For example, if you have thought about becoming a real estate agent or broker, people in this industry earn, on average, between $44,090 and $56,570 per year. Getting into this type of work usually requires a high school diploma and then passing some real estate courses to get your license, but no formal college. Many specific trades also pay very well; you may have to find an apprenticeship, earn a license and/or go to a technical school, but you will not need a college degree to become an elevator installer and repairer, a plumber, pipefitter or electrician. Also, working as a claims adjuster/appraiser for an insurance company usually requires only a high school diploma; the average pay is $63,670 a year.
College is Not a Prerequisite for Success
Aunt Janet can go on all she wants about college; as you will soon find out for yourself, you can definitely enjoy a successful career path doing a job you enjoy without going to an expensive university. You will also not have to shoulder student debt for years to come, which is definitely a very good thing.
