You’ve heard all about working from home, and now you’d like to give it a try. We’ve talked before about some important tips for home-based businesses, so today let’s take a look at a few ideas and opportunities for working from home.
As an important note up front, you’ll want to make sure you have a good payment platform, preferably one that can provide the most secure payment solutions in combination with business software (see Paylidify.com for more).
Opportunity 1: Freelance Writer
If writing is your thing, why not write and get paid for it? Yes, you’ll have to have a good grasp on grammar, and it may involve significant research, but if those are skills you’re already proficient in, consider giving it a try.
Freelance writers may work for clients in practically any industry, and they do any of a number of different things: blogging, copywriting, technical writing, sponsor proposal writing, and so on.
Many of the people who hire freelance writers need blog posts to boost the search engine rankings on their websites. Others need subject matter experts who can write with authority about things like cryptocurrency, investment, or the law.
Opportunity 2: Virtual Assistant
Are you highly organized? So organized that you tend to be organized for other people, such as your significant other, friends, or family members?
If you answered yes to both of those questions, you might make a fantastic virtual assistant.
Even if they are well-organized by nature, there comes a point in the career of successful executives when they are no longer capable of managing the never-ending avalanche of calls, emails, and events they have to attend.
There was a time when being a scheduler or assistant would require you to be in the same office – a secretary, in other words. Thanks to modern communications technology, this is no longer true: there’s no reason you can’t take calls, answer email, make appointments, book reservations, and purchase tickets for your client from your own at-home workspace.
Opportunity 3: Social Media Manager
Most people who are very skilled with social media do it as a hobby – they may even laugh or complain about how much of their time they spend on it.
The thing of it is, though, the mere fact that so many people are on social media makes good social media management very valuable for many companies.
Being a social media manager will mean serving as a representative of your company, staying on brand and working to promote their influence with customers. To be sure, it’s considerably more effort and requires far more discipline than recreational social media use, but if you like social media and you understand customer service and marketing, this could be the perfect fit for you.
Opportunity 4: Web Designer/Web Developer
If you love computers and you love coding and design, being a web designer could be perfect for you. A web designer is responsible for creating awesome, engaging websites, from layout to colors to fonts and every other aspect of design.
It’s generally also good to have a background in coding, as this will allow you to do more with regard to designing sites.
A web developer is a programmer responsible for creating the code on which websites run. While often used interchangeably with web designer, web developer describes the more technical work needed to ensure that websites run as they are supposed to.
Opportunity 5: Translation Services
If you speak an in-demand language and you can demonstrate you are proficient, a job in translation services might be right for you. There are numerous very large, multi-national companies who need translators in hundreds of different local languages.
Depending on the company and the language, you may be translating everything from instructions to advertising copy to web pages. Of course, if you speak an in-demand language, the great thing about these jobs is that they reward you for knowing a language and you don’t really have to have a lot of specialized equipment.
Opportunity 6: Home Call Center Agent/Chat Agent
If customer service is your thing and you don’t mind spending lots of time on the phone, why not look for a home-based call center agent position? Despite the very real phenomenon of companies outsourcing work to India or the Philippines, there is still a very real need for some customer service positions closer to home.
The practical reality is that some customer service positions are best filled by people who speak American English without an accent and who are well-educated and familiar with American culture.
Similarly, some companies need to hire people as chat agents. These jobs may be combined with call center jobs, or they might not. Either way, they can be good if you like customer service but don’t want to spend a lot of time on the phone.
Conclusion
There are numerous business opportunities for would-be home-based entrepreneurs. If you have a good idea, a marketable skill, and the drive to succeed, you may well go far indeed.
