Another great way to market to Facebook users is to start a group. The difference between groups and fan pages is that groups are meant to foster discussions between users and have forums where users can post threads, and fan pages are more one way communication between the fan page owner and its fans. New wall posts are not broadcast across users Facebook walls, but group pages are a great way to find and communicate with potential customer. Creating a groups that isn’t strictly branded and marketed with your business is a way to get creative with your marketing. Lets say you own a gardening supply website, starting an “I Love Gardening” group would ensure that you’re communicating with targeted users who could eventually convert to customers.
Starting discussions around:
- Tips, tricks and insight relating to your industry
- Money saving techniques or tools
You can also utilize existing Facebook groups by participating in discussions that are related to your product, service or organization.
While groups are less used then they once were because the popularity of fan pages has increased over the last couple of years, they can still be a great way to market to potential users. Both groups and fan pages also have an “Invite People to Join” feature where fans and group members can extend an invite to their friend.
Don’t get Discouraged
Like almost all free marketing techniques, your Facebook following will usually not explode overnight. It takes time, persistence, and creativity to attract fans or group members and convert them into paying customers. But with enough effort and consistency, you can engage Facebook users and grow your following while spending absolutely no money.
