When is a street not just inconvenient but badly designed, damaged, and needing improvement? When is the street or highway near you unacceptable? When you run a business, how your surroundings look, such as your street, is important to its success. As an entrepreneur, it is worth your while to see that the street where your business is located meets your standards and won’t be a reason why customers are not coming to you.
There are definite standards roads and streets should meet by law. Every town, city or state has standards to be met for their roadways. The trick is to find those standards and compare them to the streets or highways near you. The local, state and federal government budgets for road maintenance, repair, and replacement are limited.
Making a Case For Road Improvement
When businesses and residents are unhappy with a street or highway, they must prove the roadways have dangerous defects before the local or higher up government agencies will act. This process can take months or years. Somewhere along the process, the residents should hire a transportation contractor and specialists such as Cochran Transportation to examine the problem area and make recommendations. The residents might ask more from Cochran in the form of supporting their case for road improvement.
This problem must be proven and the services of a civil engineering company will be needed. Choose a company with multidisciplinary capabilities such as land surveying, geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, civil design engineering, and construction advice and services. The engineering company must help the residents compare the government standards with the actual roadway and show the deficiency if there is one or more.
What projects will bring the roadway into compliance with the community needs? Will it require road widening, resurfacing, rehabilitation, safety enhancement, better signage or other improvements.
4 Danger Signs for Roadways
When the street or highway near you seems dangerous or substandard, not just inconvenient, improvements may be needed. 4 areas that can need improvement include:
1. Signage including stop signs, guide signs, and street signs need to be large enough and in good enough repair to be easily read. Improvement can be made with changeable message signs, clearer exit signs, better traffic signals, and better placement of signage.
2. Potholes, cracks, dips in the road, and other damage that can affect the safety of the roadway or even cause vehicle damage.
3. Crosswalks and dedicated left-turn lanes can be insufficient or lacking. When there are pedestrian injuries or deaths, changes are needed. When there are accidents involving left turns, improvement should be considered. Entrance and exit ramps might be unsafe or insufficient.
4. Lighting might be in poor repair or missing, leaving dark stretches of road to navigate at night. Poor lighting can lead to accidents and injuries.
Don’t Go It Alone
Once the problems concerning a local street or highway have been found and documented, it is time to get neighbors together to form a neighborhood group to seek community, state or federal help in improving the roadway situation. Street and roadway construction is a major part of most localities budgets. Streets can often be improved by street resurfacing, street reconstruction, leveling sunken sections of roadway, filling potholes, and more.
Present the Roadway Problems to the Right People
But how does one stretch of road move ahead of other potential projects? Community groups need to prepare their case well and then present it to the correct people. Hiring a reputable civil engineering company and transportation contractor to inspect the roadway in question and make recommendations in writing can help. These recommendations can be presented to the entity in charge of that section of the street or highway.
