The Internet is like riding a crowded
subway during rush hour. Your site is but a speck in the millions of web
sites vying for a customer's attention. You need to jostle and shove, even
shout to catch the attention of a potential visitor. There are just too many
other sites out there, many of which are operated by better-funded
businesses offering better products and snazzier web sites.
So how does your web site stand out in a crowd? Here are
some simple tips:
1. Get the word out about your business.
An effective way is to link up with a compatible, but non-competing website
so that customers who stop at your partner's site become aware of and can
easily jump to your site. For example, a domain registration company can
link up to an Internet marketing site.
2. Use colorful, simple graphics. However,
avoid using memory-hogging graphics and animation unless these are necessary
for your site (e.g. a stock photography site). A significant number of
global users still use 28.8 modems and the wait to download those graphics
may frustrate a potential customer and instead clicks away from the site.
3. Keep your web site copy clear and concise.
Unless you
are presenting articles, visitors do not have the patience to read through
long, boring lines of text. People who surf the Web have short attention
spans, so use sound bites instead.
4. Entice your visitors with a free offer,
whether
free newsletter, free downloads, or opportunity to join a community of
like-minded individuals.
5. Keep your content fresh.
Visitors do not
want to see the same exact web page a couple of months after they have first
visited your site. To make sure that your visitors return, give them a
reason to come back. The bigger dot-coms even go to the extent of purchasing
syndicated articles to make sure that they can offer new content to their
visitors every day. In the Internet parlance, it is called
"stickier" web sites.
6. Create a distinctive look and
feel for your web site.
Your
graphics must be unique enough to enable your visitors to clearly identify
your brand.
