I
love baseball. I have always been fascinated by the game; not necessarily
because I am thrilled with the way it is played but because I always try to
correlate a home-based business to a baseball diamond.
In our business, we try to win the game short of players. Sometimes with
just two or three players, but very often with only one. Although there are
those who get struck out, but a lot also WIN!
In our field, we pitch, we catch, we take care of the bases, we watch the
short stop and do the left and right running. We are umpires, too. And on
the sides, we still have to clean up the bench after the game. In fact, we
have to provide food and water, not just for the "team" but for
everyone who is present at the ballpark. And, not only that. We have to be
"excellent" in all these aspects. At the end of the day, as
manager of the team, we count the number of hits, the foul balls, and of
course, the singles and the home runs.
The reason for operating a home business like a baseball team is to
condition the mind to do many things. Most often in fast cadence. Home-based
businesses are formed rich in ideas but short of start-up capital: there
will be shortage of almost anything. Everything must be done in the most
cost-saving manner possible. Which means that if it can be done by me, then
let it be ME.
In our business, we become "Jacks" of all trades and
"Masters" of all. We are the bosses, the general managers, the
salesmen, the accountants, the bookkeepers, the computer technician, the
phone man, the mailman and the janitor. Of course, we are the
"caterers", too. All wrapped into one. And since it our own
business, we have to excel in each.
Ironically, inspite of the overwhelming task that would befall anyone who
dares to start, we can still see the remarkable number of people who insist
in going and starting their own business. Does everyone want to be
"Jacks" and "Masters"? Maybe! And for those who are
already there-- did you hear anyone complain? Neither!
As in baseball, when you put yourself on the field and start playing
-- you pitch, you catch, you umpire, you run the fields, you try to catch
the foul balls and count the home runs -- with only one thing in mind -- To
WIN!
Of course, you don't win 'em all. But you play for the love of the
game.
