Business License Requirement for Starting a Business with an F-1 Visa

Q. What would be the legal formalities to be completed if I want to own a home based catering business. I am an Indian National currently residing in New Jersey dependent status visa (F1 Visa) and my Husband has a H1 visa. Thanks...Urvashi

A. Dear Urvashi,

In a situation like yours, it is always better to consult the right authorities. You can visit the New Jersey website and check information on how to start a business. Then visit the nearest City Hall where you intend to open your business and inquire about the requirements on starting a business with an F-1 visa.

If you are not issued a Social Security Number, perhaps you can go into a partnership with your husband and use his SSS number for tax purposes.

Good luck!
