Starting an Art Gallery

Q. My best friend and I are both artists and plan to open an art gallery and school as soon as we can find a place to rent or lease. We would like to ask where we can find information on grants for female owned businesses. We are investing our own money to get started and are hoping to find grant money to help with initial start-up expenses. Thank you. Teri Carter

A. Dear Teri,

Congratulations on starting your own business. You're right on target as a whole new generation of women entrepreneurs is tapping into the equity markets, including venture capital and private investment.

The National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) recently did a study on women-owned firms attracting investors. I'd suggest you contact them. Their web site is www.nawbo.org or call 1-800-556-2926. They can provide you with a list of resources.

Here are some keys to attracting the dollars you're seeking: 1. Create a strong management team. The management experience of the company leaders and their understanding of the market are critical factors that investors consider in evaluating proposals.

2. Demonstrate marketing knowledge. Demonstrate a clear business concept with a realistic marketing plan.

3. Be persistent. Women entrepreneurs who have equity financing contracted an average of more than 15 financing entities, while women who are still seeking equity financing have contacted fewer than 11.

4. Have a great referral source. Two-thirds of the proposals seriously considered by institutional investors come from referral networks such as accountants, attorneys, fellow business owners and mentors.

Good luck!!
