Q.
What avenues are available to
pursue a business of circuit speaking? Where to get information
to get started and possibly a mentor? - Robert King

A.
Dear Robert,
What a great career aspiration. I've known many professional
speakers and had some as coaching clients. It is very satisfying
work.
I'd suggest that first of all you determine your focus
(topics) and your audience. What is your selling point? What do
you offer that is unique? How do you satisfy the needs of a
certain audience? Now you're ready to begin to find out what
audiences (associations, organizations, corporations) need you.
Check with community chamber/conference associations. They
are the ones that make arrangements for large audiences.
Check
out associations that serve your expertise and interest. They
book at least a year in advance.
Join your state Speaker's Association. This is a must! You
will have an opportunity to be videotaped here, meet others in
your field and do lots of networking. Eventually you'll want to
qualify for the National Speaker's Association. Check the
Internet for your local organization.
IN the meantime, build a reputation for yourself by speaking
to local groups. Get known, get experience, and GET GOING.
