Q.
Hi, I am working
on starting a home based business doing administrative work - invoices,
proposals, correspondence, etc. I am not sure how to start with this. Do I
have to have a business name, how do I do this, who do I need to contact, what
about taxes, etc. I already have two clients lined up and I just want to make
sure that I have all the information I need to start this on the right foot.
If I work for myself do I have to have a company name?? - Michell Lee

Dear Michell:
My name is Yasmeen Abdur-Rahman - owner of The Brownstone Workshop. I would
love to answer all of your concerns as I am a Virtual Assistant (VA). Starting
your own business means that you should get the legal structure of your
business in order. Go to your local chamber of commerce, Hall of Records or
small business association (SBA) in your area.
Get the legal documents needed to register the name of your company (doing
business as form), get your employee identification number (EIN) that could be
accomplished over the phone, and also prepare the proper stationery
(letterhead, business cards, flyers, brochures) for your business. This way,
your business is seen as a professional establishment whether it is home-based
or storefront.
Also, please check out my website at http://www.thebrownstoneworkshop.bigstep.com
where I have posted a new business checklist. It details the steps needed to
achieve your business goals.
Michell, I hope that I have assisted you with the needed information to get
you started on your journey towards entrepreneurial freedom.
Good luck and if you need further advice or direction, please contact me
directly at my web site listed below. I provide a startup business consultation
service as well.
Sincerely,
Yasmeen Abdur-Rahman
