Starting a Children's
Clothing Line
| |
 |
|
Q.
I've been creating
and selling children clothing for almost 15 years on a small scale (sewing and
selling few items at a time). For the last year I've dreamed of starting my
own children's clothing line. My designs are drawn for a winter, spring, summer
and fall lines. I know who I want to market and how I plan to market. The
problem is I don't know how to enter the market on a larger scale. I have been
searching the internet trying to find sewing factories and wholesale fabric
stores to no avail. How do I learn the in's and out's of this business? Where
should I start? --Gayle

Dear Gayle,
Start with contacting unions, trade associations, etc. in that industry.
You should be able to find such through search engines. I also suggest
contacting some small, private individuals who have taken their product
through the same "ropes" as you are looking for....two that come to
mind are BabySlanket ( http://www.babyslanket.com
) and a popular nursing/breastfeeding clothing line (the name currently
escapes me, but do some searches and check out the sites). On the sites, look
for stories about how the products were born....or at least contact
information. I know the BabySlanket founder is a member of Home-Based Working
Moms, and may be very helpful in giving you some guidance.
Ask questions of every contact you can find, that's how I found out so much
information about the industry I am involved in...and you can too! Best of
luck, and let me know how it turns out! With four kids ages five and under, we
go through clothes like we do pacifiers!
Best,
