One of the benefits of running your own business is also a drawback- Flexibility! When you are your own boss, you decide what gets done and when. The problem is keeping your motivation going and stopping the procrastination. I find the best thing I can do to be effective is to make set hours for working (just like in the real world!). I have to give myself dedicated chunks of time that are just for work, no distractions. That helps me stay on task and avoid putting things off.

This comment was sent to me via email:

I saw your post on procrastination and thought you might find this particularly interesting. . .Not that I want to encourage procrastinating, but when it comes to small business owners doing their taxes, waiting to the last minute seems to be a reality. Unfortunately, with the way the economy is, and everyone's busy schedules, lots of business owners put off filing taxes to the last minute and then are forced with two options: Doing them hurriedly and risk missing deductions or filing for an extension. In the past, extending could be kind of a pain and/or some small businesses weren't even aware of this option. This year, for the very first time, there is an online option for extending. They not only make the extending process easier to understand (think turbo tax but for extensions) they are also the only way to receive a confirmation that the extension was received and approved.

In any case, thought this info might be a good resource to all your small biz readers who are feeling the crunch of tax time. You can check out the website for yourself at FileLater.com, or feel free to shoot me an email with any questions.

Thanks!
Callan
