- Now is the time
to get your home into winter shape - the days are still warm and dry enough
to make it safe and maybe even a little bit of fun…(well, it would
definitely be less fun if it were already cold and rainy out.) Follow these
simple steps to prevent fire hazards and potentials for water damage.
(article continued below ...)
1. Inspect and test your smoke detectors. Make sure that there is one on
each floor of your home. Most companies give discounts for smoke detectors
on homeowner's insurance policies.
2. Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct and space under the dryer. Remove
all lint and dust.
3. Check the caulking around your doors and windows, and repair it if it
shows signs of deterioration.
4. Insulate your water pipes to protect them from freezing.
5. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep
(and be sure to shake his hand for an extra dose of good luck!)
6. Check for damage to your roof and downspouts to keep debris from
accumulating. You want to be sure that water drains away from your
foundation: Damage due to standing water or flooding is NOT covered by a
standard homeowner's insurance policy!
If you live in a flood-prone zone, or if you feel that your home has
exposure to damage by collecting rainwater, you might want to consider
adding Flood Insurance to your home protection plan. NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT
- flood insurance policies activate 30 days after you sign the application.
