-- Transoft Solutions, developers of the innovative, industry leading vehicle swept-path analysis software AutoTURN, join the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in recognizing the accomplishments of Senior Engineer, Daniel Shihundu, P.Eng. Mr. Shihundu has been recognized for his work with AASHTO’s Technical Committee on Geometric Design and the development of the 2010 edition of AASHTO’s Green Book. A letter from Mark A. Marek, P.E, Chair of AASHTO’s Technical Committee on Geometric Design, expressed thanks for Mr. Shihundu’s assistance and sharing his technical expertise.

“The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO)
Technical Committee on Geometric Design wishes to express our appreciation
for the technical assistance provided by your company. Specifically, we wish
to thank Daniel Shihundu, P.E. for his efforts to share his technical
expertise on the layout of turning vehicular paths with our members.” – Mark
A. Marek, P.E., Chair, AASHTO Technical Committee on Geometric Design
“Our goal [at Transoft Solutions] has been to develop engineering
solutions which reference and compliment the various regional design
standards used for Geometric Design. By publishing harmonized standard
design vehicle turning data, in this case to dispel the discrepancies
between the Green Book and AutoTURN,” said Mr. Shihundu. “Jointly reviewing
the standard design vehicle templates and characteristics contained in
chapter 2 of [AASHTO’s] Green Book has been, and continues to be, a
rewarding exercise.”
Since August 2007, Mr. Shihundu and Reza Amini, P.E, a member of the
AASHTO Technical Committee on Geometric Design have been working closely to
reassess the turning characteristics of standard design vehicles found in
chapter 2 of the 2004 Green Book. Mr. Shihundu has been contributing his,
and Transoft Solutions’, knowledge of kinematic model algorithms, vehicle
steering geometry and its effect on a vehicle’s turning capabilities. The
heart of Mr. Shihundu and Mr. Amini’s work has been to review the standard
design vehicles being changed, omitted, and added to the Green Book 2010
based on the recommendations of the National Cooperative Highway Research
Program (NCHRP) Report 505.
Published by TRB in 2003, the NCHRP Report 505 examined the truck
characteristics as factors in roadway design. The report acknowledges that
AutoTURN was used in the research to evaluate the turning performance
characteristics for several of the standard design vehicles included in the
2001 Green Book. Transoft Solutions and AutoTURN have been utilized to help
recommend additional vehicles for inclusion as standard design vehicles in
previous versions of the Green Book.
Collaboration between AASHTO, Transoft Solutions, and Mr. Shihundu is
currently ongoing.
