April 30, 2009 ( PowerHomeBiz ) - Jersey City, NJ  - TERENA, the leading European organization to promote and participate in the development of a high quality international information and telecommunications infrastructure for the benefit of research and education, announced on 23 March 2009, that it had selected COMODO CA Limited of Manchester, England as the preferred supplier of 'pop-up free' server certificates.

The Server Certificate Service (SCS) aims to provide low-cost 'pop-up free' server certificates 18 National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and the 2,225 organizations they serve.

The certificates will address the NRENs' 'pop-up' problem. A message saying “the issuer of this certificate is not trusted” pops up on a computer when the server uses certificates issued by a Certificate Authority unfamiliar to the browser. Popular web browsers such as Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox do recognize Comodo's digital certificates, so the 'pop-up' messages do not occur.

TERENA's role is made possible by the collaboration of network engineers and managers, who support joint European work in developing, evaluating, testing, integrating and promoting new networking, middleware and application technologies through the TERENA Technical Programme.

As a Certificate Authority, COMODO is the second-largest issuer of business-validated digital certificates. More information about the Server Certificate Service and the Call for Proposals is available on the TERENA website at http://www.terena.org/activities/scs/.
