Oakland, CA ---
Institute of Mosaic Art is proud to present a new exhibition JOURNEY TO
CENTER: MOSAICS FROM THE MINDS EYE, opening Friday, March 7th and running
through April 15, 2008. An Opening Reception with the artists will be held
from 6:30 to 8:30 PM on Friday, March 7th, and the public is invited.
(news continued below)
The exhibit is the culmination of work from the course, Mosaics from the
Mind’s Eye: Connecting to Your Creative Power, concepted by IMA’s Visiting
Artist, Lillian Sizemore. These mixed-media mosaics explore the Mandala,
(Sanskrit for “sacred circle”) as a container for creative discovery. The
mosaic mandalas on display are a reflection of many experimental techniques,
personal stories, and powerful symbolic imagery. Sizemore is curating the
exhibition with the collected works from 20+ students over four years.
The
show will include a large mandala installation of working drawings,
sketches, and progress shots charting the artistic process. The glittering
mosaic works will be on display accompanied by the student’s own explanation
of their work. Laurel True, founder of IMA, says of the work on display, “It
is fascinating how the students all take the same class, hear the same
instructions, and then come up with entirely unique approaches to materials,
style and content. The works are as individual as the artists themselves.”
The exhibition illustrates how working with the circle can connect
artists to a deeper understanding of universal and archetypal symbols.
Sizemore employs teaching methods not normally found in traditional art or
mosaic classes by using an unusual combination of thought-provoking
exercises coupled with meditation. “I developed this class based on tools I
have used in my own artistic process and I see such amazing results coming
from the students, it’s very satisfying. They even surprise themselves!”
says Sizemore.
Institute of Mosaic Art hosts ongoing mosaic exhibitions, lectures, and
visiting artist seminars at their Oakland California’s Jingletown Arts
District location. Institute of Mosaic Art shares a 5000 sq. ft. building
with a retail space, Mosaic Studio Supply, and also houses a mosaic resource
library and a commissions studio, True Mosaics Studio.
IMA has developed a loyal following and is the top venue to find the best
mosaic work being made today and this exhibition will be no exception.
JOURNEY TO CENTER: Mosaics from the Mind’s Eye is a chance to share these
visionary gifts with the community.
