Owners, presidents and CEOs of small businesses know all too well that
“it’s lonely at the top.” Offering such business leaders opportunities to
learn from their peers in order to accelerate business success, Carole
DeJarnatt, President of Alliance Advisors, Inc. in Clay County, has
announced the formation of a new “mastermind group.” She intends to bring
together small business leaders seeking objective, untainted advice and
feedback similar to the input leaders of larger businesses get from their
boards of directors.
(news continued below)
DeJarnatt, an accredited associate of the Institute for Independent
Business brings to the table 25+ years’ experience in business. She explains
how the program will work: “Eight to ten business leaders meet bi-weekly
with a skilled facilitator. They share their intelligence and advice, report
on individual progress, and encourage each other toward clearly stated
goals. I select the businesses carefully to avoid competitive relationships
but also to provide the diversity that makes the discussion rich and
productive.”
Such mastermind groups for business leaders, sometimes called CEO
roundtables, have apparently paid big dividends according to some local
business leaders. Joe Wyzskoski, owner of Magnolia Point Golf and Country
Club, believes such programs create a great atmosphere for learning how
others might approach the very same situation or opportunity. “The group
acts sort of like a board of directors for the participants,” Wyzskoski
said. “The right mix of businesses, some related to each other, some not,
brings fresh insight.”
Dick Middlekauff, President of Guardian Products, Inc. concurs.
“Participating in a mastermind group helps me see issues through the eyes of
others not directly involved. It helps me address issues in ways I could not
have discovered on my own, because I do not know what I do not know.”
DeJarnatt notes that participants must be willing to tackle tough issues
and humbly accept honest assessment and advice from like-minded peers. “If
you appreciate the feedback and intelligence that can be gained from others
outside your industry, then this could be a key to your success,” she said.
DeJarnatt pointed out that business leaders cannot get the advice and
feedback they need from employees, vendors or clients. “When you’re alone at
the top, there’s no one to bounce ideas off or to run your plans by. Who is
going to warn you of potential missteps or suggest better ways of doing
things? Not the people who are invested in your company’s current processes
and procedures.”
